Upgraded Net Core Machine-The Aerostructures Group has recently worked with a core machine supplier to develop an improved method for fabricating honeycomb core blankets. This machine can produce higher quality, stronger core three times faster then the machines it will replace in production. The machine itself has fewer moving parts and is subject to less wear.

Core Contouring-Several methods for machining contoured core blankets for use in the LID bond process have been investigated by the Aerostructures Group. At right is an example of how an electrically charged copper plate can be used to machine a contour into a surface of a core blanket.

Cold Wall Forming-A method of high temperature forming of titanium parts was developed using a tool with built in electrical heaters. For parts too big for current furnaces, this method allows the tool to generate sufficient heat to form the part, independent of facility limitations. As shown at left, this concept has been successfully demonstrated.
