NDE-Determining the integrity of parts without causing damage is the premise behind Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE). NDE is critical to ensuring part quality and many methods are already utilized at the Aerostructures Group. R&D is looking to incorporate NDE efforts earlier in the manufacturing process to eliminate the necessity of post production inspection. Various NDE methods are shown in the pictures: two types of ultrasonic inspection to the left and corrosion evaluation below. Determining the consistency and accuracy of NDE methods in use such as fluorescent dye penetrant is underway. In addition, new NDE methods for multi-piece GRID-LOCK® and SPF/DB structures are currently being examined as are various cost cutting opportunities.
