LID Bonding-Liquid Interface Diffusion Bonding (LID) combines the best attributes of brazing and diffusion bonding to attain near-base metal properties in a bonded sandwich panel. A typical LID joint between the core and face sheet is shown in the microstructure above. The panel shown in top left demonstrates some of the unique features that can be integrated into the bond panel design. Using various tooling methods, panel geometry can wrap from flat through 360 and are not limited to parallel face sheets.

Inserts For LID Bonded Parts-Current R&D efforts in LID have focused on reducing cost and in-process repairs. A key element in both these goals is the method by which inserts are integrated into the panel. Innovative spiral insert designs and new lightweight material forms are shown at left.
